God promises to purify the speech of the peoples so that all may call on His name and serve Him together.

What Does Zephaniah 3:9 Mean?

After the fire of judgment comes the surprise of renewal. God promises to turn to the peoples a pure language, cleansing their lips so they may all call upon the name of the LORD and serve Him with one consent, shoulder to shoulder. What pride scattered at Babel, grace begins to gather here, drawing many peoples into one worship.

A pure language is more than clean words; it is a heart restored to truth, able at last to speak rightly to God. This promise reaches beyond Israel to all peoples, a vision of the nations united in calling on the LORD. It points unmistakably toward the gospel, where people of every tongue are gathered into one worshiping family through Christ, with the Spirit poured out so that all may call on the name of the Lord and be saved. The God who judges also purifies and unites.

In the Original Language

saphah berurah (שָׂפָה בְרוּרָה), 'pure language' -- literally a purified lip or speech, cleansed for true and united worship of God.
