Eden Lutheran Church

About this church

Eden Lutheran Church is an inclusive ELCA congregation in Riverside offering in-person and YouTube worship Sundays at 10 a.m. The service blends traditional liturgy and hymns with a warm, participatory atmosphere; greeters and ushers answer questions, and a bulletin provides the order, prayers, and worship information. Weekly Communion is open to everyone. People may instead request a blessing, and Communion can be carried to worshipers unable to come forward. Afterward, guests are invited to coffee and conversation in the Fellowship Hall, sometimes accompanied by a potluck. Eden presents worship as a centering practice that welcomes joy, sadness, uncertainty, questions, and gratitude.

Founded in 1888 by Riverside's Swedish immigrant community, Eden continued Swedish-language services into the 1930s, acquired its Brockton Avenue site in 1945, and dedicated the present building in 1953 after extensive volunteer construction. Today the congregation follows the ELCA theme “God's Work, Our Hands.” Members assemble hygiene packs, provide food support to neighbors experiencing homelessness and hardship, support Lutheran Social Services Riverside and Central City Lutheran Mission pantries, and make quilts for Lutheran World Relief and local organizations. Formation includes First Communion and Confirmation, while members serve as readers, Communion assistants, musicians, hospitality volunteers, and community helpers. The site does not give detailed parking, accessibility, nursery, child check-in, worker-screening, hearing-assistance, service-length, or livestream-delay information.
