Adults begin Sunday School at 9 a.m. at Faith Congregational Church, and worship follows at 10 at 2030 Main Street in Hartford. Founded by African Americans in 1819 after they were relegated to gallery and rear seating in other churches, Faith became the African American Religious Society of Hartford and built a worshiping community where seating would not be assigned by race. It grew into an abolitionist and social center and established a district school that for years was Hartford's only place where Black children could learn to read and write. Today the United Church of Christ congregation describes itself as justice-minded, caring, and shaped by the liberating Word of God in Jesus Christ, while honoring both old and new worship traditions. A parking-lot ramp provides sanctuary access, and the sanctuary, nursery, fellowship hall, and an all-gender restroom are accessible. Guests receive visitor materials and can ask ushers for assistance. A first visit can begin with 9 a.m. study or the musically varied 10 a.m. service, where the church's historic witness and current justice commitments meet.
