St. Luke’s Episcopal Church is a historic African American congregation in Washington’s Logan Circle area. Organized in 1873 under the leadership of Alexander Crummell, it became the District’s first independent Black Episcopal church. Its building, constructed from 1876 to 1879 by Calvin T. S. Brent, Washington’s first Black architect, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976. That heritage continues through worship, inclusion, justice, service, and a vision for a multicultural, intergenerational community.

Sunday worship begins at 9:30 a.m. in a hybrid format, welcoming people in the sanctuary or online. The church is wheelchair accessible. Episcopal Eucharistic worship may feel familiar to people from Roman Catholic backgrounds, while the congregation says Baptist and Pentecostal visitors will also recognize elements of their traditions.
