About this church
Lyke House Catholic Newman Center serves Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, and the Georgia State University Catholic community from 809 Beckwith Street SW in Atlanta. Sunday Mass is celebrated at Lyke House at 10:30 a.m. and streamed online. The published weekday rhythm includes 12:15 p.m. Mass at Georgia State on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, Wednesday Bible studies at 6:30 p.m., faith formation at 7, and Thursday discipleship formation. Monthly Holy Hours rotate between GSU and Lyke House.
This is a campus-ministry community rather than a conventional neighborhood parish. Its mission joins students' spiritual, academic, and faith development with Catholic service and peer evangelization, summarized as transforming collegians into missionary disciples. Students may serve at Mass as readers, Eucharistic ministers, altar servers, musicians, or hospitality ministers. The Bowman Scholar program develops musicians and artists, with particular attention to Black Catholic expression and leadership in predominantly Black parishes. Community-service opportunities include twice-monthly meal service, food and clothing drives, health-awareness events, and partnerships with Atlanta parishes and nonprofits. The center celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of its multipurpose student building's dedication in 2024. For a student new to the AUC or GSU, Sunday Mass offers the broadest entry point, while the weekday studies and service projects make it easier to form relationships within campus life.
