About this church
St. Mary Magdalene Orthodox Church celebrates Great Vespers at 5 p.m. Saturday and Divine Liturgy at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at 1625 Fort Howard Road in Rincon. Feast-day services are normally at 6:30 p.m. the preceding evening, with the weekly bulletin providing confirmation. The Sunday liturgy is sung in English without instruments, using Slavic and Greek melodies and ancient Christian chant. Visitors are encouraged to arrive a few minutes early; there is no strict dress code, though the parish suggests reverent, business-casual clothing, and children remain welcome throughout worship.
The congregation began when Savannah-area Orthodox believers organized a mission in January 1989 after petitioning for one the previous year. Services moved through homes and rented spaces before the parish bought land in Rincon in 2002 and celebrated its first liturgy in the present temple in August 2006. Church school now meets after Sunday Divine Liturgy and coffee hour for potty-trained children age three and older, blending Scripture, Orthodox teaching, saints' lives, activities, and play. A wider youth group welcomes participants from age five into their early twenties for service, fellowship, spiritual development, retreats, and outings. Newcomers unfamiliar with icons, incense, standing, or a cappella worship can use the unusually detailed official first-visit guide, then experience the liturgy without being expected to imitate every devotional practice.
