Holy Cross Catholic Church

About this church

Holy Cross Catholic Church serves central Champaign at 405 West Clark Street. Its current parish calendar publishes a Saturday Vigil Mass at 5:30 p.m. and Sunday Masses at 8:00 and 10:00 a.m.; because holy days and seasonal liturgies follow separate schedules, the homepage calendar is the best final check. The parish belongs to the Diocese of Peoria and describes its mission as continuing the life-giving work of Jesus within a welcoming spiritual family. Liturgical service includes lectors, altar servers, musicians, ushers, sacristans, and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion.

The parish has more than a century of local history. Holy Cross marked its centennial in 2012, and the present church opened in 1924. Inside, visitors encounter a star-studded blue ceiling and stained glass by Emil Frei; the bell tower’s bells remain part of the building’s story. Parish life extends into family faith formation for children in kindergarten through eighth grade, adult formation and initiation, a Catholic school, service, and community events. That combination makes Holy Cross both a neighborhood parish and a historic Champaign landmark. Families should consult the events and formation pages for registration dates, while visitors attending Mass can begin with the regular weekend schedule.
