Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church

About this church

Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church is a small ELCA congregation in Deerfield where people are meant to be known by name. Founded by Swedish immigrants in Highwood in 1874, Zion relocated to Deerfield in 1955. Its mission is to grow in faith and share Christ’s love through worship, fellowship, learning, partnership, and service. A recent expression of that history is Zion Woods, an accessible, environmentally conscious housing project opened in 2025 on the former parsonage site.

Sunday worship begins at 9:30 a.m. and lasts approximately sixty minutes. The service is described as warm, Scripture-rooted, and peaceful. Children are welcome and activity bags are available; clothing is unrestricted, parking is near the main entrance, and the building is wheelchair accessible. Greeters help newcomers find their way, making this a relatively straightforward single-service visit. The church’s office is staffed Monday and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to noon, although ministries continue through the week and pastoral appointments can be arranged. Visitors interested in a close-knit Lutheran setting can plan around the single Sunday hour, while people needing accommodations can contact the church in advance through a form that specifically includes accessibility requests.
