About this church

Normal First United Methodist Church worships at 5:00 p.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m. Sunday, with the Sunday service livestreamed. The congregation stands beside Illinois State University and hosts MERGE, the United Methodist Wesley Foundation campus ministry, but describes itself as more than a campus church: its members and programs span ages, backgrounds, and varied life journeys. Founded in 1865, the church has occupied its present North School Street location in the heart of the ISU campus since 1957.

Its vision is to be transformed by God and help transform the world into a compassionate, just, inclusive, Christ-like community. The School Street Pantry provides a visible neighborhood expression of that goal, while other ministries give people ways to worship, receive care, and serve. Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors is reflected in the church’s invitation to people from many faith backgrounds. The Saturday evening option is useful for weekend flexibility; Sunday morning adds the livestream and the fuller rhythm of a downtown congregation connected to university life.
