First United Methodist Church

About this church

First United Methodist Church in downtown Columbus begins Sunday School at 9:00 a.m. and worship at 10:00 at 618 Eighth Street. The service is traditional, using responsive liturgy, hymns, chancel choir, pipe organ, a children's moment, and a sermon. Visitors may park in the main Eighth Street lot, behind the church on Lafayette Street, or across from the main lot on Ninth Street. Nursery and children's formation options are available, and the welcome emphasizes everyone has a place in the community.

The church's mission is forming vibrant, thoughtful, serving disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. One of its most visible local ministries opens the building every Monday from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. for a free hot meal and fellowship. Staff and volunteers typically serve 150 to 250 meals, with no questions asked of guests. Adult classes, small groups, family gatherings, a public Christian library, scouting, Vacation Bible School, and social activities create other entry points. The combination of a detailed traditional worship description, three parking choices, and a substantial weekly meal ministry makes this more than a downtown address: visitors can understand both the Sunday experience and how the congregation serves Columbus throughout the week.
