About this church
Kensington Baptist Church in Maryland worships Sundays at 11:00 a.m. The congregation describes itself as mission driven, gospel based, diverse, and committed to acceptance and service. Choir members rehearse before Sunday worship, and deacons can bring Communion to homebound participants. The church also hosts occasional public concerts, including relationships with the Listen Local Concert Series and Trinity Chamber Orchestra.
Kensington Baptist was constituted on October 11, 1922, when Ida Simms helped gather 27 charter members who first worshiped in a tent on Dupont Avenue. Its community role has since included school-supply and migrant-worker projects, Bethesda Help and Interfaith Works donations, ESL and citizenship classes, health screenings, nursing-home ministry, and space shared with congregations and community organizations. The current site hosts the Parent Encouragement Program, Iglesia La Voz de Cristo al Mundo, Kingdom Life Empowerment Church, chamber music, and a children’s bike camp. For newcomers, the result is a Baptist church whose one published worship hour sits within a century-long pattern of local partnerships, arts, practical assistance, and shared space.
