St Mary's Romanian Orthodox Church

About this church

St. Mary's Romanian Orthodox Church, formally the Nativity of the Ever-Virgin Mary parish, worships at 8 Addison Street in Chelsea. Saturday preparation begins with catechism at 4:00 p.m., Vespers at 5:00, and confessions at 6:00. Divine Liturgy is Sunday at 9:30 a.m.; additional liturgies are served for Great Feasts and major saints. Services use both Romanian and English, and side-by-side bilingual service books help visitors follow the liturgy.

The parish welcomes non-Orthodox guests and children, then holds coffee and fellowship after Sunday worship. Its visitor guide recommends modest, respectful clothing but notes that actual dress ranges from jeans and T-shirts to suits and long dresses. Visitors who are not Orthodox may attend but do not receive Holy Communion; the parish invites them to receive blessed fellowship bread at the end. Parking is limited in the church driveway, with street spaces on Washington Avenue and Eden Street and a city lot on Crescent Avenue. Established as a Romanian Orthodox mission in 2003 and later elevated to parish status, St. Mary's combines Romanian heritage with bilingual worship and unusually practical guidance for a first Orthodox liturgy.
