Slackwood Presbyterian Church

About this church

Slackwood Presbyterian Church holds its 10:30 a.m. Sunday service onsite and online from 2020 Brunswick Avenue in Lawrence Township. Middle- and high-school Sunday school meets at 9:15 a.m. from September through May, while younger children have church school during the worship service. This arrangement lets families worship together while still providing age-specific learning, and it gives teenagers a class before the main gathering.

The congregation traces its beginning to a Sunday school led by Ruth Stevens in 1812. Its building later served civic as well as church purposes, including housing the local public library, and Slackwood called its first full-time pastor in 1947. Today the church describes itself as a diverse, caring Christian community guided by Scripture, with an intentionally inclusive vision and a commitment to creating a safe community. Local partners include Explorations Community Preschool, the Lawrence Community Center and HomeFront, and the Lawrence Township Community Foundation. A first-time guest can attend the 10:30 service onsite or watch the livestream, while the long local history and named community partnerships help explain Slackwood's continuing role beyond Sunday worship. Both formats follow the same published weekly hour.
