Gethsemane Baptist Church begins Sunday School at 9 a.m. and worship at 10 at 326-330 15th Avenue in Newark. Holy Communion is observed during the 10 a.m. service on the first Sunday of each month. Wednesday Bible study meets at 7 p.m. through Zoom, with a dedicated online link for youth as well as adult study. Gethsemane was organized in October 1949 at Newark's Masonic Temple and recognized as a Baptist mission in April 1950. After worshiping in borrowed spaces, members purchased the present 15th Avenue property, broke ground in 1953, and completed the upper sanctuary in 1956, with much of the construction performed by church members. Today's ministry roster includes deacons and deaconesses, trustees, ushers, missions and bus-stop outreach, scholarships, music, Sunday School, youth, singles, women, men, and Walking in Freedom. Prayer requests are handled by an intercessory team, while counseling resources address grief, family needs, anger, and substance-related struggles for adults and young people. Visitors can start with Sunday School or arrive for worship, then use the Zoom study as a lower-travel midweek connection. The first-Sunday Communion schedule is useful for guests specifically hoping to share that part of Baptist worship.
