Scarsdale Friends Meeting

About this church

Scarsdale Friends Meeting gathers for unprogrammed Quaker worship Sunday at 11:00 a.m., with an online Zoom option. Friends enter quietly and settle into shared silence, seeking communion with God and guidance for themselves, the meeting, and society. The hour may remain entirely silent or include brief spoken messages from people who feel led by the inner light. A period of silence opens and closes the meeting, which ends with a handshake around noon. Refreshments and conversation then continue in the social room, giving first-time visitors a straightforward way to meet the community after an unfamiliar form of worship.

The meeting emphasizes simplicity, humility, kindness across social boundaries, peace, and direct spiritual experience without clergy or sacraments as necessary intermediaries. Its local history reaches back to a 1716 preparative meeting in Mamaroneck and a meetinghouse moved to Scarsdale in 1768—the town’s first purpose-built religious structure. The modern meeting has linked contemplation with service through draft counseling, care for Hiroshima survivors, displaced-person assistance, homeless services, and criminal-justice reform. Its space also hosts a nursery school, a Jewish congregation’s Saturday worship, Al-Anon, and the United Nations Women’s Guild.
