About this church
St. Anthony of Padua Church celebrates its Saturday Vigil at 4:30 p.m., followed by Sunday Masses at 9 a.m. and noon, at 28 State Street in Troy. The 9 a.m. Sunday liturgy is available through the parish's YouTube page. Outside those scheduled times, the church is open for private prayer and visits during Mass hours on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Visitors seeking Reconciliation or another sacrament should use the parish's current sacramental information or contact the friary before arriving.
St. Anthony's began when Father John Santoro received permission to organize Troy's twenty-three Italian Catholic families as a national parish. The first community celebrated Mass in the basement of another church, and immigration-driven growth around the turn of the twentieth century eventually required a larger worship space. Continued expansion led to land on Fourth Street for a new school and rectory between 1957 and 1965. Parish ministry now includes lectors and extraordinary ministers of Communion, along with pastoral visits, Anointing of the Sick, and Communion for Catholics who are hospitalized or homebound. That care gives the downtown parish a life beyond public weekend Masses. A newcomer can choose among three weekend liturgies or preview the 9 a.m. celebration online; families arranging illness or homebound ministry should call rather than relying only on the public schedule.
