First Christian Church

About this church

First Christian Church in Oak Ridge gathers for Sunday worship at 10:45 a.m. The congregation describes the service as informal while retaining a recognizable liturgical flow: candles are lighted at the Communion table, the church sings both praise songs and traditional hymns, a responsive call to worship and Scripture readings involve the congregation, and prayer and preaching shape the service. Piano, organ, and electric drums contribute to a musical approach that can move between older and newer styles.

The congregation belongs to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a Restoration Movement denomination emphasizing Christian unity and congregational self-government. Its roots reach to 1949, when thirteen people met in an Oak Ridge home to organize a Christian church; the first service followed at the old Robertsville School. The congregation began worshipping in its Gum Hollow Road facility in 2009. Children from preschool through fourth grade can join Worship & Wonder during Sunday worship for an age-appropriate encounter with Bible stories and Christian practice. The church’s stated identity is “Sharing God’s Word and Living God’s Love,” supported by principles for respectful common life. The campus is at 100 Gum Hollow Road. Check announcements for children’s sessions, online worship, and special congregational events.
