Saint Columban Catholic Church

About this church

Saint Columban Catholic Church in Yelm celebrates a 5 p.m. Saturday anticipatory liturgy and a 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass. Daily Mass meets Tuesday through Friday at 9, except first Fridays, and confession is available Saturday from 3:30 to 4:30. First-Friday devotions begin at 6:30 p.m. The parish also cares for Saint Peter Mission in Tenino, where Sunday Mass is at 8 a.m. Because the two communities share clergy and formation, visitors should distinguish the Yelm schedule from the Tenino mission listing.

Catholic life in the Nisqually Valley developed after local families asked the bishop to send a priest, with a documented Yelm Mass in 1913. The parish takes its name from Columbanus, the Irish missionary who founded monastic centers across present-day France, Switzerland, and Italy. Current faith formation serves kindergarten through fifth grade, grades six through twelve, and adults preparing through OCIA. Liturgical roles include choir, lectors, Communion ministers, and altar servers; a women's ministry supports parish events, outreach, and twice-monthly coffee and doughnuts after the 10:30 Mass. A first visit can therefore combine Sunday Eucharist with an easy fellowship opportunity when the hospitality ministry is scheduled.
