Continuing his point, Paul reflects that he himself baptized very few of the Corinthians, only Crispus and Gaius. He frames this as a cause for thanks given the factions now forming.
His relief is not that baptism matters little but that no one can now claim to belong to Paul on the grounds that Paul baptized them. He had no wish to gather a following to himself. A faithful servant rejoices when attention flows past him to Christ. Paul would rather be forgotten than become the rallying point of a party, so long as the people belong wholly to the Lord.
