What Does 1 Corinthians 10:2 Mean?
Continuing the exodus picture, Paul says the people were 'baptized unto Moses' as they went beneath the cloud and between the walls of water. The language deliberately echoes Christian baptism. Just as the Corinthians were initiated into the new covenant through water, Israel was sealed to their deliverer and led into a new life as a freed people.
The point is unity and identification. To be 'baptized unto Moses' meant to belong to the people he led and to the God who called them out. So too the believer, joined to Christ, belongs to a delivered community. Paul is preparing a sober lesson: shared initiation and shared blessing did not guarantee that every Israelite would remain faithful, and the same searching truth presses upon the church.
