Jehoshaphat died and was buried in Jerusalem with his royal ancestors, and his son Jehoram became king.

Context

Jehoshaphat's reign comes to an end after approximately twenty-five years. He is succeeded by his son Jehoram, who becomes king of Judah.

What Does 1 Kings 22:50 Mean?

The language 'slept with his fathers' is the biblical euphemism for death, carrying a sense of rest and continuity with those who have gone before. Jehoshaphat is buried in the city of David, the royal necropolis of Judah's kings, a mark of honor and legitimacy. His son Jehoram inherits the throne without contest. The transition is orderly, the succession assured. Yet the next verse will show us a kingdom passing into far less faithful hands than Jehoshaphat's own. Even a good king, one who sought the Lord and reformed his people, cannot guarantee that his successor will walk in the same way.

In Jehoshaphat's death, we encounter a fundamental truth: faithfulness in one generation does not compel faithfulness in the next. He sought God, brought prophets into his councils, and taught his people the law. Yet he leaves behind a son who, whatever his inherited wisdom, will prove wavering and vulnerable to pressure. This is both sobering and liberating. We are called to be faithful in our own generation, to raise our children with the values and faith we hold dear, but we cannot control their choices. Our responsibility is to model integrity and love; the outcome rests with God.

Application

As we age and contemplate what we leave behind, Jehoshaphat reminds us that our legacy is not measured by our children's perfect obedience, but by our faithfulness and the values we embed in them. Our duty is to love them and teach them; their choices are their own before God.
