What Does 1 Peter 2:6 Mean?
Peter turns to the prophet Isaiah, who spoke of a cornerstone God himself would lay in Zion. The stone is chosen and precious, the same words Peter used of Christ.
A cornerstone sets the line for the whole building; everything is measured by it. The promise attached is for the one who believes: he shall not be confounded, never disappointed, never put to shame. For a church mocked by outsiders, this is steadying. To rest one's whole weight on this stone is to be guaranteed against the shame the world would heap on them.
In the Original Language
akrogoniaios (ἀκρογωνιαῖος), 'corner stone' -- the foundational cornerstone that aligns and supports the building.
