Paul says they have no need for him to write about the timing of the Lord's coming.

What Does 1 Thessalonians 5:1 Mean?

Having comforted them about the dead in Christ, Paul turns to the question of timing, the 'times and the seasons' of the Lord's coming. Yet he says they 'have no need' that he write about it. They already know what they need to know; the important thing is not to calculate the date but to be ready.

There is gentle wisdom in this. Curiosity about exactly when the Lord will return is natural, but Paul does not feed it. He had taught them the essential truth, and the rest is not theirs to know. Rather than chase dates and signs, they are to live in constant readiness, which is the burden of the verses that follow. Paul redirects their attention from speculation to preparation. The day is certain; its hour is hidden. What matters is not predicting the time but living so that whenever it comes, it finds them watchful and walking in the light.
