An overseer should not be a new convert, lest pride lead him into the devil's downfall.

What Does 1 Timothy 3:6 Mean?

Paul warns against placing a new believer in such a role too quickly. Without time to grow, the honor may swell into pride.

Pride was the devil's own ruin, and it can ruin a leader the same way. Paul's counsel protects both the church and the young convert, giving faith time to deepen and humility time to take root before the weight of leadership is laid on.
