What Does 2 Kings 19:22 Mean?
God turns from comforting Zion to confronting her enemy with a piercing question. Whom have you reproached and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your proud eyes? The answer falls like a verdict: against the Holy One of Israel.
Sennacherib thought he was simply conquering another city, but God names the true object of his arrogance. To lift up the eyes and voice against Jerusalem was to lift them against God Himself. The title Holy One of Israel sets the LORD utterly apart, in purity and majesty, from any earthly power. The proud king has measured himself against the wrong opponent. All defiance of God, however vast it appears, is finally a small thing raising itself against the Most High.
