What Does 2 Peter 1:17 Mean?

Peter recounts the moment that proved Christ's majesty: the Transfiguration. Jesus "received from God the Father honour and glory" when a voice came "from the excellent glory" — the radiant presence of God. The words spoken were unmistakable: "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." Peter himself stood on that mountain and heard it.

Here the Father openly honors the Son. The voice declares both relationship — "my beloved Son" — and approval — "in whom I am well pleased." Father and Son are revealed together, the one bearing witness to the other. For Peter, this was not theology learned secondhand but a memory of glory blazing before him and a divine voice ringing in his ears. The believer can trust who Jesus is because heaven itself announced it. The honor Christ holds is not claimed by men but conferred by the Father, who delights in His Son and calls all to listen to Him.
