Paul charges Timothy to find his strength not in himself but in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

What Does 2 Timothy 2:1 Mean?

After recounting both desertion and faithful friendship, Paul turns to Timothy with a direct charge. The strength he calls for is not raw willpower but a strength drawn from grace, the grace located entirely in Christ Jesus.

It matters greatly where strength is sought. Paul does not tell Timothy to toughen up on his own; he tells him to be strengthened by grace already available in Christ. This is strength received before it is exercised, a power that flows from union with the Lord. For the reader weary or afraid, the command is also a comfort: the energy needed for faithful living is not self-generated but supplied. We grow strong by drawing nearer to the One whose grace never runs dry, leaning into Him rather than gritting our way forward alone.
