What Does 2 Timothy 4:22 Mean?

Paul ends his final letter as he began, with grace. He prays that the Lord Jesus Christ would be with Timothy's spirit, and that grace would rest upon him. These are likely among the last written words of the apostle.

It is fitting that Paul's farewell rests on the presence of Christ and the gift of grace. After all the charges, warnings, and personal pleas, he commits Timothy not to his own strength but to the Lord's nearness and to grace, the same grace that had carried Paul himself through every trial. For the reader, this closing benediction is a gift to receive as well. The presence of the Lord Jesus with our spirit and the grace of God upon our lives are the deepest needs and greatest blessings of all. With these words, a faithful life draws to its close, entrusting the next generation to the unfailing grace of God.
