What Does Daniel 12:10 Mean?
The angel describes how the time of trouble will sort hearts. Many will be 'purified, and made white, and tried,' language drawn from refining metal and washing cloth. Others, the wicked, will only harden, going on in wickedness and remaining blind to the truth that the wise perceive.
Trial is shown here as God's refining fire, painful but purposeful, burning away impurity to leave something clean and bright. The same hardship that purifies the faithful only exposes the stubbornness of those who refuse God. Understanding, in this vision, is moral as much as mental; it belongs to those whose hearts are being made pure.
