What Does Ecclesiastes 9:12 Mean?
The Preacher illustrates human ignorance of the future with two images from the hunt. Fish swim freely until the net closes; birds fly at ease until the snare springs. So it is with people: a fatal or evil time can fall suddenly, without warning, while we go about our days unaware that our hour has come.
This is not meant to breed dread but watchfulness. Since we do not know our time, we are urged to live ready, holding our plans loosely and our hearts before God. The very uncertainty that unsettles becomes, for the faithful, a reason to stay awake and prepared.
