Ecclesiastes 9:18 Meaning and Explanation

The Preacher closes the chapter with a final pairing. On one side, wisdom is declared better than weapons of war, more decisive than any arsenal, as the rescued city proved. On the other side stands a sobering caution: one sinner can destroy much good. What wisdom patiently builds, a single wrongdoer can swiftly undo.

Both halves are true and meant to be held together. We should prize wisdom above force, yet never grow careless about the damage one person's sin can do to many. The verse urges us to value the quiet, building work of wisdom and to guard against the corrosive power of evil. It leaves us longing for the perfectly wise One whose goodness no sinner could finally destroy.
