What Does Galatians 6:5 Mean?
This seems at first to contradict the call to bear one another's burdens, but the word has changed. Earlier the burden was a crushing load; here it is the soldier's pack, the ordinary load each is expected to carry himself. Some responsibilities cannot be handed off.
Every man shall bear his own burden — his own work, his own accountability before God. We help each other with the crushing weights of life, yet no one can answer for another's faithfulness or stand in another's place at the last. The two truths hold together: shoulder a neighbor's overwhelming load in love, and yet carry your own proper share without excuse. Compassion does not cancel responsibility; it completes it.
