What Does Hebrews 11:18 Mean?
This verse sharpens the weight of Abraham's test by recalling God's earlier word. It was through Isaac, and no other, that the promised descendants were to come.
To offer up Isaac was therefore to place the entire promise upon the altar, since the future of the covenant ran through this one child. The command seemed to cancel the very word God had given. Yet Abraham held both the promise and the command in faith, trusting that God could keep His word by means beyond Abraham's sight. Faith does not always see how God will be true; it simply trusts that He will.
