What Does Hebrews 3:11 Mean?
The quotation from Psalm 95 closes with God's sworn word. Because of persistent unbelief, that generation was barred from entering His rest, the promised land toward which they had journeyed. The parenthesis that began in verse 7 now ends, having laid the whole sober example before the reader.
My rest is more than a place; it is the settled peace of arriving where God intends His people to dwell with Him. To forfeit it was to wander and die outside the promise. Yet the very fact that the writer quotes this so long afterward signals hope: the offer of rest still stands, and the warning is given precisely so that this generation might enter in where the last did not.
