What Does Hebrews 7:2 Mean?
The writer draws out the meaning hidden in the names. Abraham, the father of the faithful, responds to this priest by handing over a tenth of all the spoils, an act of honor and submission. Then the titles are unfolded: Melchizedek means king of righteousness, and Salem means peace.
Righteousness and peace are exactly the gifts the gospel will join together in Christ. The order is instructive, for true peace follows from righteousness and never replaces it.
