What Does Hosea 12:3 Mean?
Hosea turns to the story of the nation's ancestor, Jacob, whose very name recalls the heel he seized as he and Esau were born. From the beginning Jacob was a striver, grasping for what he wanted. Then the prophet leaps to a later night, when this same man contended with God himself and was changed.
The two moments frame a whole life. The grasping heel-catcher became the one who clung to God and would not let go. There is a summons hidden in the memory: the strength Jacob spent scheming was finally bent toward seeking God's blessing. A people who share his name are being called to share that turning, to stop grasping at lesser things and lay hold of God instead, where alone true strength is found.
