What Does Hosea 7:8 Mean?
Ephraim stands for the whole northern kingdom. Instead of remaining distinct as God's covenant people, it has mingled its worship and politics with the surrounding nations. Hosea pictures the result as a flat cake left on the coals and never flipped, burnt beneath and uncooked above.
A half-baked cake is useless, neither one thing nor the other. So is a life of divided loyalty, partly devoted to God and partly given to the world. The image gently calls the reader to wholeness, to a faith fully turned toward the Lord and evenly formed by His hand.
