What Does Hosea 8:4 Mean?
The northern kingdom had a turbulent line of kings, many seizing power by murder and intrigue rather than at God's direction. God says these rulers were set up without Him, and that the same silver and gold He had given the people were melted into idols. Both the throne and the altar had become works of human will.
When people fashion their own authorities and their own gods, they build the instruments of their own destruction. What is made apart from God cannot save; it can only fail and fall. The heart will worship something, and whatever it crowns in God's place becomes a tyrant. Scripture calls us instead to the King whom God Himself appointed, whose reign brings life rather than ruin.
