What Does James 1:21 Mean?
James calls for a clearing away and a taking in. Lay apart all filthiness and the overflow of wickedness, stripping off moral defilement as one removes soiled clothing. In its place, receive with meekness the engrafted word, the message planted within that is able to save the soul.
The word is pictured as a living thing rooted in the heart, like a graft set into a tree to bear new fruit. It is received not with pride but with meekness, a teachable lowliness that lets it take hold. The same word that gave new birth now continues its saving work in those who welcome it. The reader is invited to make room, to let the implanted word grow toward salvation.
In the Original Language
