What Does James 4:12 Mean?
James names why judging a neighbor is presumption: there is one Lawgiver and Judge, the One able to save and to destroy. Final judgment belongs to God alone, who both gave the law and holds the power over life and death.
Then comes the piercing question: who are you to judge your neighbor? To set oneself up as judge is to usurp a place that is God's only. The reminder humbles every censorious impulse. We are fellow servants under the same law, not magistrates over one another. James leaves the question hanging so it will search the reader's heart.
