What Does Job 24:19 Mean?
Job draws an image from nature to picture the end of the wicked. Just as drought and scorching heat swallow up the melting snow until it vanishes, so the grave swallows those who have sinned. What seemed to flow freely is simply gone, drawn down and dried up without trace.
The comparison is sober and certain: no amount of present prosperity halts this appointed end. Scripture reminds us that all flesh is grass and that the grave receives rich and poor alike. Yet for those who belong to God this is not the final word. Christ has broken the grip of the grave, so that for the faithful death is swallowed up in victory.
