What Does Job 26:1 Mean?
This brief line opens Job's response to Bildad of Shuah, whose terse speech in the previous chapter exalted God's majesty in order to belittle Job. It is the standard formula that introduces each round of dialogue in the book, marking a shift back to the sufferer's voice.
Job will not be silenced by a sermon that has no comfort in it. That he answers at all is itself an act of faith: he keeps speaking toward God and toward his friends rather than withdrawing into despair. The Lord later honors this persistence, for Job spoke of God what was right (Job 42:7).
