What Does Job 28:23 Mean?

At last Job gives the answer the whole poem has been seeking. God understands the way to wisdom; God knows its place. What is hidden from every creature, unreachable by mining and unpurchasable by gold, lies fully open to the Maker of all things. Wisdom is His.

This is the resolution toward which every verse has pointed. The long search through earth and sea and grave was meant to bring us here, to the realization that wisdom is found in God or not at all. There is deep comfort in this. The treasure we cannot reach is held by One who can give it freely. Job teaches that the path to understanding is not finally a path through the earth but a path to God Himself, who knows the way and gladly leads His people in it.
