Job 35:5 Meaning and Explanation

Elihu begins his answer by pointing upward. Look at the sky, he says; see the clouds riding far above your reach. The gesture is meant to recalibrate Job's perspective: if even the clouds are beyond him, how much more is the God who set them there. It is the same medicine the Lord will later administer from the whirlwind, an invitation to measure oneself against the vastness of creation.

To raise the eyes is often the beginning of humility and of comfort both. The heavens that dwarf us also declare a Maker who is not distant but attentive, 'who covereth the heaven with clouds, who prepareth rain for the earth' (Psalm 147:8). Seeing how high God is need not crush us; rightly received, it frees us from the small, anxious work of being our own judge.
