What Does Job 37:10 Mean?
Elihu presses deeper into the marvel of cold. By the very breath of God, frost is given; at His exhaling the wide waters are straitened, bound up and frozen into ice. The breath that gives life can also lay a sheet of ice across the face of the deep.
The image is striking and tender at once. The same breath of God that animates all living things shapes even the frost on a winter morning. Nothing in the natural world is too ordinary to bear the mark of His direct action. For the reader, this draws the Maker very near: the God of galaxies is also the God of the frozen pond.
