What Does John 15:27 Mean?
The testimony of the Spirit (verse 26) will not float in the air; it will be joined to the testimony of the disciples. The eleven have been with Jesus from the beginning — since the Jordan, since Galilee — eyewitnesses of all he did and said, and that long companionship is now their commission.
This is how the gospel reached us: the Spirit and the eyewitnesses testifying together — we are his witnesses of these things, the apostles would soon say, and so is also the Holy Ghost (Acts 5:32). Their witness became the Gospels we still read. The pattern continues wherever people who have been with Jesus speak of him and the Spirit makes the words live. The chapter that began with abiding ends with witnessing, for fruit is borne outward, and the life of the vine was always meant for the world.
