Context
The listeners in the synagogue are wrestling with Jesus's claim. The word 'strove' (erizō) suggests a sharp, contentious debate among themselves.
What Does John 6:52 Mean?
They have just heard him say he will give his flesh to eat. The response is not reverent silence. It is argument. They turn to one another in confusion and outrage. How can this man do such a thing? The logic seems impossible. A living man cannot divide his flesh and give it to many and still be alive. They are thinking carnally, literalistically, and from that frame, the thing is absurd. Yet this is often where faith begins. Not with easy comfort, but with a question that refuses to let us alone. 'How?' It is not yet belief, but it is not yet dismissal either.
We might pity their confusion, but we should also see ourselves. We too come to Jesus with the eyes of flesh. We too ask: How? How can his blood wash away sin? How can he be God and man both? How can my old self die and I be born again? The scandal of the gospel is that it frequently does not make sense to the mind that has not yet been opened by the Spirit.
Application
When we encounter truth that upends our understanding, our first response is often confusion or even offense. Rather than staying stuck in 'How?', we might ask: What if I am limited in my seeing? What if the Spirit is inviting me to grow?
