Joshua 1 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

Moses has died, and now it's Joshua's turn to lead. It's a huge job — and God gives him the same promise, over and over: be brave, because I am with you.

Today's Story

Moses, the great leader, had died. The people were sad, and maybe a little scared. Who would lead them now?

God chose Joshua, who had been Moses's helper for years. God said to him, “Moses my servant is gone. Now it's your turn. You will lead My people across the river into the good land I promised them.”

It was a giant job, and Joshua must have felt nervous. So God told him something — and then said it again, and again, so Joshua would never forget it: “Be strong and brave. Do not be afraid. Do not lose hope. For the Lord your God will be with you everywhere you go.”

God told Joshua the secret to being brave: remember God's words, think about them all the time, and do what they say.

Joshua took a deep breath. He gathered the people. “Get ready,” he told them. “In three days we cross the river. God is giving us the land!”

Joshua was still a little nervous — but he wasn't alone. God goes with His people, wherever they go.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. God told Joshua “be strong and courageous” again and again. Why do you think Joshua needed to hear it more than once? When do YOU need to hear it?
  2. God's reason for being brave was “I will be with you.” How does knowing God is with you help you be brave?
  3. What's something coming up that feels a little scary, that you could ask God to help you be brave for?
