Jude prays that mercy, peace, and love would be multiplied to his readers in ever-increasing measure.

What Does Jude 1:2 Mean?

Ancient letters typically wished the reader grace and peace. Jude expands the blessing to three gifts and asks not merely that they be present but that they be multiplied. He writes to people about to face hard warnings, and he begins by drawing down upon them the very gifts of God they will need.

Mercy meets us where we have failed, peace settles us when threats arise, and love binds us to God and to one another. Jude does not wish these in scarce supply but in overflowing abundance. It is a tender opening for a letter that will speak bluntly about danger: before the storm, a benediction. The same God who calls and keeps his people delights to pour out more than they can hold.
