Ezekiel 17 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

Ezekiel was a messenger for God. Sometimes God gave him picture-puzzles to share — riddles that hid a big lesson inside.

Today's Story

God said to Ezekiel, “Tell My people a riddle.” So Ezekiel did.

“Once there was a great big eagle with huge wings,” he began. “The eagle flew to a tall tree, snapped off the very top twig, and carried it far away to a city of traders.

“Then the eagle took a little seed and planted it in good soil, right by lots of water. The seed grew into a vine. But the vine did something strange. Instead of reaching up toward the first eagle, it stretched its roots toward a second eagle, hoping that one would give it more water.”

The people leaned in. What did it mean?

God explained. The vine was their king. He had made a promise to do one thing — but then he turned and leaned on someone else to help him instead. He broke his word. And a vine that leans the wrong way does not grow strong. It wilts.

But God was not finished. “I will take a tender little twig from the very top of the tree,” He said, “and I will plant it on a high mountain. It will grow into a big, beautiful tree. Birds of every kind will come and rest in its branches.”

God can grow something huge and safe out of one tiny twig. He always keeps His word.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. The vine leaned the wrong way for help. When you have a hard day, who do you lean on first?
  2. God grew a giant tree from one little twig. What is something small in your life that God might be able to grow into something big?
  3. The riddle's big tree had room for birds of every kind to rest. Who is someone you could make room for, so they feel safe and welcome?
